Running Back Handoffs

Modified: Tuesday, July 15 2008 05:16 by admin - Categorized as: football coaching, football tips
A major role of a running back is obviously “running” the ball. The exchange is just as important for the receiver as it is for the quarterback. The techniques running backs need to know to successfully receive a handoff are:

1. The running back should lift his arm closest to the quarterback approximately shoulder level and inside of his shoulder so that he does not interfere with the quarterback during the exchange.

2. The running back’s bottom arm should be placed below the waist with the palm of his hand facing up.

3. Once the running back feels the ball, they should squeeze the ball into their body with the upper and lower arms to protect the ball. Typically this is where the running back lowers his center of gravity and lowers their shoulders while keeping their knees up.

Make sure you spend adequate time with the exchange with younger players as this is an important part of their game.
