Getting Started Coaching Football

Whether you are a first-year football coach, or a veteran football coach, one of your many responsibilities is knowing the rules and being to teach and explain them to your team.

Start by reviewing the football playing field to the players. Make sure they understand these field markings:
Note that some youth leagues will make modifications to the field size and number of players that play on the field at one time. Make sure you are aware of any modifications that might apply to your age group. Often times items such as: reduced field sizes, fewer players on the field, smaller balls, on-field-coaches, series of plays rather than downs, no special teams, basic formations only, or no blitzing. Check with your league to see if they have any special rules that apply to your age group.

Also as a football coach, you also must know the offensive and defensive positions inside and out. You must know what skills and physical attributes are required for each position and you must fit those skills and attributes with the right player on your team.
