The exchange between the center and quarterback is crucial for the play to have any chance of success. Here are some steps in teaching players how to hike the ball.

1. The quarterback must be positioned behind the center. The quarterback must be close to the center and bent slightly forward. His feet should be shoulder width apart and his knees bent slightly depending on the height of the center.

2. The quarterback’s passing hand should be placed into the crotch of the center with the palm of their passing hand pointing down. With his wrists touching, his other hand faces forward with his fingers pointing towards the ground.

3. Once the exchange takes place, the quarterback should quickly bring the ball towards his stomach to protect the football before executing a handoff or dropping back to pass.
