Running Back Pitch Drill

Drill Objective:

This drill will focus on teaching the running back the fundamentals of receiving a pitch.

Drill Setup:

Position 2 lines of Running Backs about 5 yards apart on one sidelines facing the opposite sidelines. Have one line of running backs start with the football.

Drill Instructions:

Have each line pitch the ball back and forth while making their way to the opposite sidelines. One running back might have to slow his pace or jog in place to allow the other running back time to catch up to the play. Once the running backs reach the opposite side, have them repeat this action and return to the starting sidelines.

Drill Coaching Points:

  • Make sure the running back properly catches the football pitch. A proper pitch consists of the running backs hands being out slightly above waist level with their elbows slightly bent with his palms of his hands up.
  • Make sure the running back watches the ball into his hands.
  • Make sure the running back catches the ball with 2 hands.
  • Make sure the running back secures the ball after catching it.
