Running Back Cut Drill

Drill Objective:

This drill will focus on teaching the running back how to cut sharp and quickly.

Drill Setup:

Create a grid approximately 5 yards apart. Position a Quarterback near the first cone and the running backs should start in their stance approximately 3-4 yards behind the quarterback.

Drill Instructions:

On the coaches command, have the quarterback hand-off to the running back who sprints 70% to the first cone. He then quickly and sharply cuts 90 degrees and heads towards the 2nd cone. He then cuts again and sprints 70% to the third cone where he cuts one last time and sprints 100% past the final cone. After a couple times through, have the running backs perform the entire cutting drill at 100%.

Switch the direction of the runs so the running back works on cutting with their left and right feet.

Drill Coaching Points:

  • Make sure the running back is staying low and under control.
  • Make sure the running back is getting a good push off with the outside foot as he cuts and starts to sprint.
