Running Back Bag Drill
Drill Objective:
This drill will focus on teaching the running back the correct stance, receiving the hand-off, securing the ball, with a quick cut and change of direction at the end.
Drill Setup:
Position 2 lines of 3 tackle dummies about 5 yards apart with 1 yard between each bag. Split the running backs into 2 groups one behind each tackle dummy line. The running back should start about 4-5 yards before the tackle dummies.
Drill Instructions:
Start the running back in his proper stance. On the coaches command, the running back should take a hand-off from the quarterback (or coach) and sprint into the tackle dummies directly in front of him. After the running back breaks through the last bag, the coach will signal a direction for the running backs to cut. The running backs should quickly cut in that direction with a quick and sharp cut and sprint 5 yards.
Drill Coaching Points:
- Make sure the running backs are in their proper stance and are able to explode quickly from their stance.
- Make sure the running back lifts his inside arm (arm facing the quarterback) and elbow in tight so that it is out of the way.
- Be sure the running back keeps a low center of gravity with their shoulders down and their knees up.
- Make sure they practice good ball protection and that they squeeze the ball into their body.
- Make sure the cut is sharp and quick.
