Running Back Hand-Off Drill

Drill Objective:

This drill will focus on teaching the correct way for the running back to receive a hand-off from the quarterback.

Drill Setup:

Split the running backs into 2 lines facing each other about 10 yards apart. You will only need 1 football for this drill.

Drill Instructions:

The first player in one line starts with the ball. The running back with the ball advances towards the opposite line and hands-off to the first player in that line. This action repeats. Have the players switch lines so that they are receiving the hand-off from both sides. Increase the speed as the running backs get comfortable with the exchange.

Drill Coaching Points:

  • Make sure the running back lifts his inside arm (arm facing the quarterback) and elbow in tight so that it is out of the way.
