Running Back Hand Off Concentration Drill
Drill Objective:
This drill will focus on teaching the correct way for the running back to receive a hand-off from the quarterback and will help the running back secure the ball due to the immediate contact after the exchange.
Drill Setup:
Align 2 tackle dummies next to each other about 3-4 yards from the quarterback. The running back should line up a couple yards behind the quarterback.
Drill Instructions:
On the coaches command, have the quarterback and running back make a hand-off exchange. As the running back receives the ball, have them explode through the tackle dummies and head upfield. You can also place a linebacker at the end of the tackle dummies so that the running back has to make a move to make it up field.
Drill Coaching Points:
- Make sure the running back lifts his inside arm (arm facing the quarterback) and elbow in tight so that it is out of the way when making the exchange.
- Be sure the running back keeps a low center of gravity with their shoulders down and their knees up.
- Make sure they practice good ball protection.
